Trump's message on the occasion of 100 days in office
May 01, 2025
Washington [US], May 1: U.S. President Donald Trump has hailed his first 100 days back in the White House and promised to deliver the largest tax cut in the country's history.
US President Donald Trump marked the first 100 days of his second term with a rally at Macomb Community College in Michigan on the afternoon of April 29 (dawn on April 30, VN time). The rally was similar to a rally during Trump's campaign, with about 3,000 supporters in attendance, according to The New York Times.
"The first 100 most successful days"
At the rally, President Trump said he missed the campaign and began with a speech that often sounded more like a candidate's than a head of state. Trump said that his opponent in the 2024 presidential election is the "sleepy" former US President Joe Biden, whose Democratic opponents are "radical left" and that friendly countries have "abused us more than our trade enemies".
Also at the rally, Trump hailed his first 100 days back in the White House since Jan. 20 as "the most successful first 100 days of any administration in the history of our country," according to AFP. "We have had the greatest economy in the history of the country," Trump said of his first presidential term, from 2017 to 2021. "We have done very well and are now doing better," Trump was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Trump has previously stepped up calls for the U.S. Congress to cut taxes, a plan that nonpartisan budget analysts say could add trillions of dollars to the country's $36.6 trillion public debt. "In the coming weeks and months, we will pass the largest round of tax cuts in U.S. history, including no tax on tips, no tax on social security, no tax on overtime," Trump said at a rally in Michigan.
Economic concerns
Ahead of the rally in Michigan, President Trump signed several executive orders to partially ease the 25 percent tariff on automobiles and auto parts, a significant reversal as import tariffs threaten to hurt U.S. manufacturers. according to the AP. Mr. Trump described this change as a bridge for automakers to move more production lines into the United States.
At the rally, Trump emphasized that the move to impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners could lead to a revival of domestic manufacturing. "With my tariffs on China, we are ending the largest job theft in the history of the world," Trump said.
Meanwhile, new polls show Americans don't believe in Trump's economic vision, according to Reuters. In a three-day Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on April 27, 42 percent of respondents approve of Trump's performance so far, while 53 percent disapprove. Recession fears soared as Trump launched a global trade war, raising tariffs to a level that economists warn could bring trade with some countries, especially China, to a near halt.
In addition, Democratic senators have called the first 100 days of the Trump administration "100 days of chaos," according to Reuters. In it, Senator Richard Durbin accused President Trump of challenging and violating constitutional boundaries, accumulating power for himself when the economy is in decline, and violating the rights of the American people, according to Reuters.
